If you need one well-defined feature shipped - a recommendation engine, a support chatbot, a forecasting model - an external team can scope, build, and hand it off faster and cheaper than a hiring process that typically takes months in the current Bay Area market. You get a working feature without carrying a six-figure salary before you've validated the feature is even worth having.

A Simple Filter

Ask: do we have more than six months of continuous AI/ML work already scoped? If yes, hire in-house. If you have one clear feature and an uncertain roadmap after that, bring in a team to ship the feature, and revisit the hiring question once you have real usage data to justify it.
